Antenna base

Got a base for my antenna today.

My plan with the Bleriot was always to make it look as much as possible like the original one, but don’t cut back on safety things. The radio is one of them I would say. I really want to make sure I have a good radio system. And with that comes an antenna.

What I am going to do is put a thin 1/4 wave length stainless steel Whip antenna on the Cabine. And when I am on the ground, I can easily take the antenna of, so its not really obvious I have this….

So this base of the antenna is going to sit on a small “platform” I would call it, of about 2″ x 3″ on top of the Cabine:

The 4 steel wires that hold up the Cabine and the 8 wires that go to the wing form a nice ground plane.

When I showed the antenna guy a few pictures of a Bleriot, he agreed that that was a perfect position for the antenna. The 5mm coax will come down through the left 1″ Chromoly tube, right where the radio is going to be, so nice and short connection.

Platform for the antenna base

Started on some work here today as other main jobs are holding me up.

I took the Cabine (see above) of the plane and started with some angle brackets, that will hold the little “platform for the antenna base. Also made a little hole at the bottom of the left steel tube of the Cabine for the coax cable, so it can go down through the tube and out through the little hole at the bottom so you won’t see any cable at all !!

Trouble soldering

Almost finished, just having trouble soldering the core of the coax to the brass ( I think ) block where the antenna shrews onto.
Will try a more powerful soldering iron at work.

And the coax cable coming out at the bottom, straight into the radio in that corner of the cockpit 🙂

Today while I dropped of some bits at the local engineering shop for welding, I also dropped of a few bits I prepared for welding for the PTT (push to talk) switch that’s going to sit on top of the control stick. So this is used for switching the radio into transmit mode, for when you want to talk !

Will show you what it is when its back and ready to install on the stick.

Blow torch

Yes done the soldering of the tip of the base for the antenna. Used a little blow torch at work for this, took maybe 30 seconds and it was hot enough to solder. So that’s done now. Will finish it some time when I can’t work on the engine, that’s got the highest priority.

Cabine back

Finished this now, and put the Cabine back on the fuselage. Will make a photo tomorrow with the antenna screwed on. Will have to pull the Bleriot outside to screw the antenna on as there isn’t enough height, where it is now in the shed.
