Painting starts

Yesterday and today full on painting!

The day started a bit disappointing yesterday. I am sewing a zip in the fabric that’s behind me covering two sections. Everything was ready to start, but when I got the sewing machine, I noticed I had a non fitting foot control pedal. It was swapped with someone else’s when it went for a service a few months ago. So that was the end of that.

So decided to start with the next job; painting.

Sort of glad I didn’t do this sewing and fabric business. The are still a few tubes visible when you look into the open back end of this fabric, so I painted these as well.

First a coat of self etching primer, then the first coat of black paint. A bit disappointing again. Second disappointment this weekend, as the black doesn’t cover 100{7d16e8204fe0e6723feb9d00795e42e38ac880e6f88f519e81a8ab927d02eaa1} over the light gray primer. So I have to do another coat of black.

But this is a changed looking plane now. Maybe not to obvious when looking at the photo’s but I love it.ย Basically all the tubes covered by fabric and the ply sheets in the cockpit are black.ย In fact all visible tubes are black, except the tubes in the “open” wire braced fuselage. They will have a timber look.

This job is massive compared to all the other kit sets that you get from Airdrome Aeroplanes. The other ones don’t have any tubing exposed apart from the ones you see from within the cockpit. Here everything in the fuselage is visible. But then that is what is so special about this plane ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s going to be beautiful !!!

Yes finished the second coat of black paint tonight. I really like the black, it looks classy ๐Ÿ™‚
I am sure the originals had black paint on steel components as there probably wasnโ€™t much of a choice in those days.
I know I have more black then the originals, but most of that is behind the fabric and the ply sheet of the fuselage. The open part behind me will look very original. Can’t wait to put the imitation wood vinyl on. It looks very nice. I will start with the preparations for that on Friday when we have a national holiday…….
And when thats done I make you another photo ๐Ÿ™‚

Vinyl preps

Yesterday and today I have been busy “making” wood. Basically preparing the last bits of exposed aluminium on the fuselage by applying the fabric glue to the aluminium, and today putting on the vinyl with the print of walnut wood on it. It might be the wrong kind of wood, never used on a Bleriot but the colour just looks great!6872072_orig

Below a photo I made “tomorrow” (Sunday) with a good look at the new wood look. Very happy with it, worked well ๐Ÿ™‚

Painting fuselage fabric

Finished the fabric for the fuselage and started painting it. Scary !!!! but I think its a good colour. Just one coat so needs a bit more……………..

Oh yes I did cut out the zip I painstakingly sewed in. Its just to hard make it perfectly going around in a relatively sharp radius. So now its a nice round opening, and after the TV crew has been here, I will cut out that section and glue in a new piece of fabric. For that reason I covered some of the fabric with some paper and painted over that, so that when its time for the new fabric, I can glue it on without any problems.

Second seat

Here you see me sitting in the second seat that’s only temporarily, and for a TV recording in a few weeks.

Below the rudder done !!!

Also today I started painting the elevator. Only one coat done. I need 3 coats to get rid of the green glue shining through the fabric.

Sealing the wings

Yesterday and today, a massive job, painting the wings.ย First a thin coat of the sealer.

And then coat one of three………

The tired but happy painter ๐Ÿ™‚

For a weight measurement, I temporarily attachedย the wings to the fuselage and everything else like control cables, tail anti collision light, instruments, battery and ply panels etc etc. Will detail these tomorrow when I have rested a bit.

But Yes Happy !!
The Bleriot still looks a bit “naked” but give me a bit more time and you will see what my “answer” is to that. It WILL be beautiful ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes it was a long long day, but on schedule for a TV recording for a program done by Radar on TV One !!!!

And hopefully flying at the Omaka show in Blenheim this Easter in 6 weeks ……….. So much to do so little time. Lets just hope it can fly by then. Otherwise I will go anyway and show of this beauty ๐Ÿ™‚

Electrics for rudder

After our big TV day last Sat, back into it.
With my parents here on holiday for the last week, can’t spend to much time, but yesterday and today I worked with my dad on the rudder to get the anti collision light in to it. Trying to get wires through the aluminium tubes isn’t easy sometimes, but almost there. The light is on the rudder, wiring coming out and a string at the moment through a longeron of the fuselage, so hopefully tomorrow just pulling through that wire and job done.
Light looks good on the rudder, or I should say hard to see, because thats what I wanted. Will show you soon.

Cable guides elevator

Reports a bit short these days, so much to do not enough time. But tonight I tied strings to the elevator control, to find out where I am going to position the cable guides, so I can cut them out of steel tubes and strips at lunchtime at work.

More guides welded

Yes made up the cable guides at lunchtime and dropped them of at the engineering place, were Isaac is going to do a bit more welding form me so I can pick it up tomorrow and install the whole elevator control system on Saturday ๐Ÿ™‚

In the mean time I also need to do some daytime work and have a family in the evening. But soon it will be finished ๐Ÿ™‚

Elevator cables

Yesterday I picked up the cable guides for the elevator, and today (after dropping of my parents at the airport who flew back home to the Netherlands) I started doing the cables for the elevator. Yes looking good, but might have to do one more little thing. In neutral position, the two cables are nice and tight but going forward and backwards, the is less tension in the cables. Maybe it needs a spring.

Getting ready ๐Ÿ™‚

All sort of things today, getting ready for next Wednesday, when the Bleriot is trucked to Blenheim, where we will prepare the plane for the big show at Easter in Omaka. I will stay there for up to 5 days, and hopefully by the end of those days, it will have made some flights !!!
